Who we are

An independent guide to the actual city

Not a tourist board, not the government, not a listicle farm. Live data and honest writing about what New York is really like — right now.

Last updated July 2026CityOfNewYork.co — unofficial & independent

CityOfNewYork.co is an independent, unofficial guide to New York City. We're not affiliated with the city government, the MTA, or any agency — for official business, that's nyc.gov. What we are is a small editorial project trying to answer the question a visitor or a curious local actually has: what's worth doing here, and what's it really like?

What we're trying to do

Most "things to do in NYC" content is either a press release or filler. We aim for the opposite: specific, opinionated, and honest. We'd rather tell you a famous spot is overrated and point you three blocks away than pad a list to hit a number. When something has a catch — a line, a tourist tax, a better time to go — we say so.

The site pairs that editorial voice with live data, so the practical stuff is current: the weather right now, what's on tonight, whether the trains are running.

Where the live data comes from

Everything dynamic on the site is pulled from real, checkable sources:

  • National Weather Service — the weather that shapes the day's picks.
  • MTA — live subway status. Citi Bike — real-time dock and bike availability.
  • Ticketmaster — concerts, shows, and events actually on sale.
  • OpenStreetMap and Wikipedia — place, venue, and landmark reference data.

When a feed is down, we say the feed is down — we don't invent a placeholder. Honest degradation over a confident lie, every time. (The full data and cookie detail lives in our Privacy Policy.)

On AI-assisted writing

Some articles on this site are drafted with the help of AI and then reviewed and edited by a person before they go live. We think that's a fine way to cover a city this big — but only under strict rules, because we'd rather publish nothing than publish something made up:

  • Grounded in real facts. AI-assisted posts are written from real source data — our own vetted neighborhood and venue information and cited references. The facts come from the sources; the AI only helps with the prose. If a detail isn't in the source, it doesn't go in the article.
  • A human reviews every one. Nothing AI-assisted publishes automatically. A person reads it, checks it, and approves it first.
  • Clearly labeled. Any AI-assisted article carries a visible "Written with AI, reviewed by a human" note. We never pass it off as something it isn't.

Plenty of the site — the guides, the editorial voice, the calls about what's worth your time — is written the old-fashioned way. Where AI helped, you'll know.

How we keep the lights on

The site is free and supported by advertising (served through Google) and, eventually, the occasional clearly-marked affiliate link. Ads never buy their way into our recommendations — a paid placement is a paid placement, and our editorial picks are ours. How the ad and analytics cookies work is spelled out in the Privacy Policy.

The short version. Independent, unofficial, honest. Real live data, real editorial opinions, and a clear label wherever AI lent a hand. Questions or corrections? Tell us — we read them. Updated July 2026.
