The NYC subway, explained like you're not an idiot

The subway is the best thing about New York and, for roughly one day, the most intimidating. It runs 24 hours, reaches all five boroughs, and moves more than three million people on a weekday — and once it clicks, you'll never rent a car here again. Paying — it's all OMNY now
Tap and go · the MetroCard is gone
The old yellow MetroCard was retired in early 2026. Everything is OMNY now, which is just contactless tap-to-pay: hold your credit/debit card, phone, or smartwatch to the round reader on the turnstile and go. No app, no account, no ticket machine required. If you'd rather not use a bank card, you can buy a physical OMNY card at a station vending machine.
What a ride costs, and how to stop paying
- A ride is $3.00, subway or local bus, any distance. You pay when you enter; there's no tap-out and no zones.
- The week caps at $35. OMNY stops charging you after 12 rides in a rolling 7-day window — every ride after that is free until the window resets. Don't buy a weekly pass; the cap does it automatically.
- Use the same card every time for the cap to add up. Tap one card for one person — no swiping a friend through on the same card.
- Subway-to-bus (or bus-to-bus) is a free transfer within two hours of your first tap.
- Up to three kids under 44 inches ride free with a paying adult. Seniors 65+ and riders with disabilities qualify for half-fare through a Reduced-Fare OMNY account.
Express vs local — the thing that trips everyone
The one distinction that actually matters
On many lines, some trains are local (they stop at every station) and some are express (they skip most of them to move faster across long stretches). Get this wrong and you either crawl through 30 stops you didn't need or blow past the one you wanted.
On the map and the signs, an express stop is a white diamond and a local stop is a solid circle. The train itself announces whether it's running express, and the platform signs and in-car strip maps tell you the next stops. The fix when you overshoot is painless: get off, cross to the opposite platform, and take one back the other way.
Am I on an express?
- Check the strip map inside the car — the lit dots are the stops this train makes. Gaps mean it's skipping them.
- Listen for “this is a Manhattan-bound express train” — they say it, every time, at the doors.
- If your stop is a solid circle, not a diamond, an express won't stop there. Take the local for the last leg.
Reading the map — the local trick
Colors, letters, and the word that saves you
The color is the trunk line — the shared track through Manhattan — and the letter or number is the specific route. So the 1, 2, and 3 are all red because they share the same Manhattan spine, but they branch to different places uptown. You want the route, not just the color.
Here's the trick locals use and tourists miss: New York doesn't say north and south, it says Uptown and Downtown. Before you tap in, read the direction sign at the entrance — at many stations the two directions are behind separate turnstiles or even separate street stairs, and if you pick wrong you may have to exit and re-tap to fix it (paying again). “Uptown & The Bronx” or “Downtown & Brooklyn” on the sign is telling you which way the trains from that platform go.
Learn one word — Uptown or Downtown — and you've solved half the subway.

Nights & weekends — where it gets weird
The 24/7 system has a catch
New York is one of the only cities on earth with a subway that never closes — but that doesn't mean it runs the same at all hours. Late nights and weekends are when the maintenance happens, so trains get rerouted, run local when they'd normally run express, skip stops, or don't run at all on some segments.
Three things that save a late-night trip
- Always check service changes on weekends. Signs are posted in the station and the apps flag it — the normal map is often a lie on a Saturday.
- Expect long waits after midnight — trains can be 20 minutes apart. Check the countdown clock or app before you commit to the platform.
- Wait in the Off-Hours Waiting Area late at night — a marked spot near the station booth, monitored and better-lit — and ride in the same car as the conductor (the one with the lit “C” zebra board mid-platform).
Accessibility — the honest state of it
Step-free is improving, but check first
This is where the system is weakest. Fewer than half of the stations have elevators, though the MTA keeps adding them and the count rises every year. If you use a wheelchair or a stroller and need step-free access, check the accessible-station list in the app before you rely on a station — and know that elevators do go out of service. Every station also has a wider accessible fare gate. Mind the gap between the train and the platform; it's real, and wider on curved platforms.
Six habits that mark you as not-a-tourist
- Let people off before you get on. Stand to the side of the doors, not in front of them.
- Have your payment ready before you reach the turnstile.
- Stand right, walk left on escalators.
- Move to the center of the car — don't cluster by the doors.
- Take the backpack off in a crowded car and hold it low.
- Don't stop at the bottom of the stairs. Step aside to check your phone.
