Two neighbourhoods carry most of this, at opposite ends of the city, and they serve different purposes. Manhattan has Curry Hill, the stretch of Lexington Avenue in the high 20s that grew up around Kalustyan’s, a spice shop that has anchored the block since 1944 and still draws cooks from across the region. It is the convenient option, walkable from Midtown, and it skews toward full-service dining rooms. The larger and more interesting one is 74th Street in Jackson Heights, Queens, formally named Little India by the city in 1992 — three blocks between Roosevelt and 37th Avenues holding one of the densest concentrations of South Asian food commerce anywhere outside the subcontinent. South Asian is the accurate word rather than Indian: Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Nepali and Tibetan kitchens share the same blocks, alongside sweet shops, snack counters and grocers, and the regional range on offer there is far wider than the standard tandoori-and-curry menu the cuisine is known by elsewhere in the city.
