Stern Architects, opened in June 2026 and added gallery space, a conservation lab and a home for the Stuart and Jane Weitzman Shoe Museum.
The collection rewards a specific kind of attention. It holds all 435 surviving preparatory watercolors John James Audubon made for The Birds of America — the actual sheets from which the engraved plates were pulled, which is a different object entirely from the printed book. It also holds one of the world's largest collections of Tiffany lamps and glass, and a library of more than three million books, pamphlets, maps, atlases, newspapers, manuscripts, prints, photographs and architectural drawings.
A first-timer's misjudgment is expecting an art museum. The strength here is documentary depth, and the galleries work best when read as arguments assembled out of paper. The museum sits on Central Park West immediately south of the American Museum of Natural History, which makes the two easy to pair, though they ask for entirely different kinds of looking.
