Construction began in 1857 on a design by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and the park's 843 acres make it larger than the country of Monaco.
The park is enormous enough that crowds cluster near the southern entrances and the Mall, leaving the North Woods and the Ramble far quieter.
