The High Line's first section opened in 2009 atop a former elevated freight rail line that operated from 1934 to 1980 — the full 1.45-mile park was completed in 2014.
Being an elevated, largely unshaded walkway above traffic, the High Line offers little shelter from sun or wind and can feel crowded in its narrow midsection even when nearby streets are calm.
