Opened in 1833 as Sailors' Snug Harbor, a retirement home for aging seamen, its Greek Revival halls were among New York City's first designated landmarks in 1965 and now anchor an 83-acre campus of museums and botanical gardens.
The campus bundles several small museums and a cluster of distinct botanical gardens into one visit, and the S40 bus from the St. George ferry terminal stops near the front gate.
