The Financial District is New York's business center, home to Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange, and One World Trade Center. The Exchange traces its founding to the Buttonwood Agreement, signed by 24 stockbrokers outside 68 Wall Street on May 17, 1792. Three years earlier, on April 30, 1789, George Washington took the first presidential oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street, when New York was the nation's first capital; the Federal Hall National Memorial stands on the site today.
