Greenwich Village is a historic neighborhood known for its bohemian culture, jazz clubs, and Washington Square Park, where the marble Washington Square Arch, designed by Stanford White and completed in 1892, commemorates the centennial of George Washington's 1789 inauguration. The Village Vanguard, open on Seventh Avenue South since 1935, is the oldest operating jazz club in the city, though it opened as a folk and poetry room and only turned to jazz in 1957. The neighborhood is also where the modern LGBTQ rights movement took root: the June 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street is commemorated by Stonewall National Monument, designated in 2016 as the first U.S. national monument dedicated to LGBTQ history.
