The read Gramercy Park in short
Gramercy Park is centered on one of New York's only private parks, gated and accessible solely to residents with keys. Developer Samuel Ruggles carved the park out of a drained swamp in 1831 and deeded it in perpetual private trust to the surrounding buildings, whose residents still pay a yearly fee for one of its keys. On the park's south side stands The Players, the club actor Edwin Booth founded in 1888 in an 1847 mansion at 16 Gramercy Park South, counting Mark Twain and General William Tecumseh Sherman among its incorporators.
