The read Harlem in short
Harlem is a historic center of African-American culture and jazz heritage, home to the Apollo Theater and a long tradition of soul food restaurants. The Apollo opened January 26, 1934, and Amateur Night began that same year — a 17-year-old Ella Fitzgerald won it on November 21, 1934. Sylvia's, the soul food restaurant Sylvia Woods opened on Lenox Avenue in 1962, earned its founder the nickname Queen of Soul Food, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, founded in 1968 and on West 125th Street since 1982, collects and exhibits work by artists of African descent.
