The read Long Island City in short

Long Island City is an emerging neighborhood with modern high-rises, art galleries, and waterfront parks. MoMA PS1, opened in 1976 inside a former 1892 public school building, is one of the country's leading contemporary-art spaces; at the waterfront, Gantry Plaza State Park preserves two 1925 railcar transfer gantries from LIC's industrial docks. Long Island City was literally its own city — incorporated in 1870 and independent until the 1898 consolidation into Greater New York — and the neon Pepsi-Cola sign on the waterfront, built in 1940 atop the company's bottling plant, was relocated into Gantry Plaza State Park in 2009 after the plant closed.
