Founded in 1988 at 97 Orchard Street, a tenement built in 1863, the museum tells the stories of an estimated 15,000 people from more than 20 nations who lived in its two buildings. A few blocks north on East Houston Street, Katz's Delicatessen has been slicing pastrami since 1888, making it New York's oldest delicatessen.
