The read New Dorp in short
New Dorp (Dutch for "new village") was resurveyed by the English in 1671 over the earlier Dutch settlement of Oude Dorp. The Staten Island Railway's New Dorp station has served the neighborhood since 1860, though the 1889 stationhouse was moved to Historic Richmond Town in the 1960s; New Dorp Beach runs along its eastern edge. Inland, Moravian Cemetery — opened in 1740, the oldest and largest active cemetery on Staten Island — covers 113 acres at the foot of Todt Hill, and its private Vanderbilt section holds the Romanesque family mausoleum that Richard Morris Hunt designed for William Henry Vanderbilt in 1885-86.
