The read Port Richmond in short
Port Richmond sits on Staten Island's North Shore at the Kill Van Kull, in the shadow of the Bayonne Bridge (opened 1931). The bridge is its own superlative: its 1,675-foot steel arch over the Kill Van Kull was the longest in the world for 46 years, until West Virginia's New River Gorge Bridge surpassed it in 1977. Settled by Dutch and French colonists in the 1690s, the neighborhood later drew Irish, German, Italian, Polish, and Scandinavian immigrants to its 19th-century docks and factories. No rail serves it directly — buses (S44, S46) connect to the rest of the island.
