New Brighton
Snug Harbor Cultural Center, a former sailors' home turned 83-acre arts campus
The read New Brighton in short
New Brighton is home to Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, an 83-acre former retirement home for sailors (established 1833) now housing the Staten Island Museum, the Noble Maritime Collection, and the Staten Island Botanical Garden — reachable by the S40 bus from the St. George ferry terminal. The showpiece among the gardens is the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden, opened in 1999 after a team of some forty artisans from Suzhou assembled its pavilions, ponds, and scholar's rocks on site — one of only a handful of authentic Chinese scholar's gardens in the United States.
