Riverdale is an affluent, leafy neighborhood on the Hudson River, known for its private schools, parks, and a suburban feel within city limits. Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson, was once a private estate whose tenants included the young Theodore Roosevelt in 1870 and 1871 and Mark Twain from 1901 before the Perkins family deeded it to the city in 1960. Manhattan University — Manhattan College until its 2024 renaming, and a Riverdale fixture since the early 1920s despite the name — anchors the neighborhood's southern end, near the 1 train's Van Cortlandt Park-242nd Street terminus, the subway's last remaining Victorian Gothic elevated terminal.
