Tottenville is New York State's southernmost neighborhood, with a small-town feel: historic homes, waterfront dining, and Conference House Park at the tip of the island. The park's namesake is the stone Conference House, built around 1680 by English sea captain Christopher Billopp, where on September 11, 1776, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge met Britain's Lord Howe for a peace conference — the Americans refused to renounce the Declaration of Independence, the talks collapsed after three hours, and the war went on for seven more years.
