Upper West Side

The Upper West Side features cultural institutions like Lincoln Center and the American Museum of Natural History. Lincoln Center's first completed building, Philharmonic Hall (now David Geffen Hall), opened September 23, 1962, with a Leonard Bernstein-led concert televised live on CBS. The natural history museum is far older, founded in 1869, a year before the Met across the park. On Central Park West at 72nd Street, the Dakota, completed in 1884, was among the first large apartment buildings on the Upper West Side and remains the city's oldest surviving luxury apartment house.
