Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) is a historic neighborhood of brownstones with a deep African-American heritage and a growing arts scene. Restoration Plaza on Fulton Street, rehabilitated in 1972 from a former Sheffield Farms milk-bottling plant, is home to the nation's first community development corporation, founded in 1967 by Robert F. Kennedy and Jacob Javits. The Stuyvesant Heights Historic District, designated in 1971 with more than 400 buildings of architectural significance, preserves the neighborhood's rowhouse streetscape. Bed-Stuy is also a film landmark: Spike Lee shot Do the Right Thing (1989) on Stuyvesant Avenue between Lexington Avenue and Quincy Street, a block the city co-named Do the Right Thing Way in 2015.
