The read Bushwick in short
Bushwick is Brooklyn's street art capital, with colorful murals, warehouse loft spaces, DIY music venues, and a dense late-night bar scene. The Bushwick Collective, founded in 2012 by Joseph Ficalora, turned the blocks around Troutman Street into an open-air mural gallery, including a Biggie Smalls tribute (Danielle Mastrion) that's stood since the same year. The neighborhood is far older than its warehouse scene: Peter Stuyvesant chartered it in 1661 as the Dutch town of Boswijck, and by 1890 German immigrant brewers had built Brewer's Row — 14 breweries in a 14-block stretch — making Bushwick the beer capital of the Northeast until Prohibition gutted the industry.
